University of Memphis Description:

Located about four miles east of downtown, the University of Memphis is the flagship research university in the Tennessee Board of Regents system. The university was founded in 1912. The park-like campus is a designated arboretum offering self-guided tours, and the red brick buildings are laid out in a Jeffersonian style similar to the University of Virginia. In academics, the University of Memphis offers a wide range of majors and degrees, with notable strengths in journalism, nursing, business, and education. Academics are supported by a 14 to 1 student / faculty ratio. The university has an active Greek system, with both fraternities and sororities. Outside of the classroom, students can join a number of student-run clubs and activities, including religious clubs, honor societies, academic groups, and performing arts ensembles. On the athletic front, the Memphis Tigers compete in the NCAA Division I American Athletic Conference. Popular sports include football, basketball, track and field, and tennis.
